The Asia-Pacific Music Creators Alliance (APMA) has led the APMA-Malaysian Music Creators Joint Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on December 5, 2024, bringing together Malaysian music creators and APMA Executive members to share their experiences and exchange their perspectives on the issues encountered by music creators today.
At the event, Mrs. Yusnieza Syarmila Yusoff, the Deputy Director General from the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), delivered a welcoming address, and was also honored to be presented with the appreciation plaque collaboratively prepared by APMA and CIAM in acknowledgement of MyIPO’s significant contributions to enhancing rights of music creators and strengthening the copyright industry in Malaysia.
As part of APMA’s commitment to supporting music creators worldwide as well as within the AP region, APMA Donation Ceremony took place at the meeting, during which the donation of USD 10,000 was awarded to the Collective Organization for Music Rights in Pakistan (COMP). COMP has been recommended by CISAC Asia-Pacific Regional Director, and was selected as the beneficiary following the deliberation by the APMA Executive Committee Meeting held online on October 15, 2024.
One of the primary topics explored during the meeting was the effect of AI on music creation, as well as the prospective developments in copyright protection. Dr. Edwin Anand, representing the music creators of Malaysia, highlighted the importance of extending the copyright protection in Malaysia to a duration of life plus 70 years.
The meeting facilitated the sharing of insights and experiences concerning the challenges such as the complexities of coordinating metadata related to musical works and the impact of AI on the industry. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Altimet, a renowned rapper, songwriter, and State Assembly representative in Malaysia.
APMA also held its Executive Committee Meeting earlier on the same day to assess its donation and financial status, as well as to review its overall activities.
